ITB India in Mumbai: Is the big Indian travel wave about to begin?

Translation:
This week, ITB India brought together around 3,000 tourism experts in Mumbai.

With strong conference topics and an exhibition featuring destinations that fit perfectly into the travel portfolios of Indian travellers, the trade fair attracted considerable interest. There is a huge boom in international travel from India, with destinations in the north—Northern Finland, Antarctica, and Iceland—currently topping the popularity scale.

But other exotic destinations also presented their products and opportunities to the Indian market.

“I think ITB India exceeded all expectations this year compared to previous events. This year, we focused heavily on destinations, destination marketing, and interesting travel destinations for the Indian market. Indonesia, the Maldives, Malaysia, Africa, and also Northern Finland. We also have a lot on board in the aviation sector, as the demand for information in this area has also increased.

“So, it’s an interesting mix this year, and we are careful to consider the suggestions of exhibitors and visitors every year and incorporate further innovations.”

Professor Dr. Wolfgang Arlt presented some interesting facts at the ITB India conference, raising the question: Is the big Indian travel wave coming soon?

For decades, people have been saying that the big Indian travel boom is just around the corner and that huge numbers of Indians will soon travel internationally. But in reality, a new figure has just been released from the outbound market: only 3% of all Indians have ever travelled outside India.

With a population of around 1.4 billion people, 3% is already a significant number. However, most Indians who travel actually travel within India.

For the inbound market, the picture looks different but is equally striking. India has almost 20% of the world’s population, but accounts for only around 2% of international tourist arrivals.

Considering how much India has to offer—including its culture, health and wellness experiences, and many other attractions—this is still a relatively small share.

This means that India, like South Asia as a whole, has enormous untapped tourism potential. Events such as ITB India are a prime example of how this potential can be explored and developed.

Of course, there are ways to take the next step forward, but there is still a long way to go. There is still considerable room for growth when it comes to international travel to India, and this fascinating destination certainly has a lot to offer.

There are already plenty of flight connections, which are constantly being optimized and expanded.

So, the message from ITB India is simple: Visit India.
