The Meaningful Tourism paradigm starts from the insight that a sustainable tourism development can only be achieved by creating a holistic approach which provides and measures benefits and satisfaction by the way tourism is organised for all six major stakeholders of tourism and hospitality.

The six major stakeholders identified for tourism and hospitality are:

  • Travellers
  • Host communities
  • Employees in tourism and hospitality service providing companies
  • Tourism and hospitality service providing companies
  • Governments on different levels and
  • Environment.

In the new situation mankind is facing, embracing adaptation and change not only helps the planet but is necessary to safe your destination or company from losing tourism business or closure.

The climate catastrophe is resulting in many traditional business models in tourism like beach holidays, city strolls, skiing and many others being threatened by heat waves, draughts, floodings, forest fires, contamination, lack of drinking water. Host communities are trying to take back the ownership of their living space by protests against overtourism. Most governments and companies react until now with short-sighted symbolic actions, employees react with their feet by leaving the industry.

ABOUT MEANINGFUL TOURISM CENTRE

The MTC Meaningful Tourism Centre is a non-profit organization based in London, with its headquarters in Kathmandu and partners and trainers around the world.  MTC focuses on two main areas: Meaningful Tourism as a practical tool for a holistic sustainable tourism development, and China’s outbound tourism, the focus of COTRI China Outbound Tourism Research Institute since more than 20 years.

 

MTC provides research, training, and consulting services for both topics to companies, organizations and institutions globally. Its founder and  director, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Georg Arlt, has extensive experience in international tourism and has been involved in the field for nearly five decades as a consultant, trainer,  publisher, event organizer and university professor.
